Speak Out For Women's Health Rally

Come join the Young Democrats @ VCU and the Virginia Coalition for Women's Health this Wedensday, September 14, 2011, at 11:30am on the Monroe Park campus' Compass Plaza as we stand up and "speak out" against additional regulation of women's healthcare, or "TRAP": Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers."

This series of regulations, which forces unnecessary regulation on health clinics and healthcare providers across the Commonwealth, goes before the Virginia Board of Health on Thursday, Sept. 15, and we want to let them know how we feel! This bill not only affects women seeking safe, affordable abortion procedures, but will also hamper the efforts of general health clinics and organizations such as Planned Parenthood.

Join us as we speak out to defend access to healthcare in the Commonwealth!

VCU Students to receive tickets to Presidential Speech

It has begun! If you want tickets, get to the VCU University Student Commons fast! The line is NOT formed downstairs in Break Point Game Lounge--instead, look for the large line beginning at the Main Street/VCU RAM crosswalk next to the Commons Plaza and running around to the side entrance of the Commons (W Main/N Cherry St. Entrance.) Keep an eye out for your fellow YDs, including Katie Tyson, VP of Finance Dylan Kean, and more!

If you'd like to meet up with your VP of Finance Dylan Kean and fellow YD Katie Tyson to get your tickets to this event, you can catch both of them at the Break Point Games Lounge starting at 5:30pm this evening! Chat up and get to know two of your fellow Young Democrats while you wait for tickets to this exciting event!

Thursday morning, via the VCU TelegRAM, it was announced publicly that 500 tickets to the Presidential speech occurring Friday at the University of Richmond will be made available to VCU students on a first come, first serve basis.

If you'd like to get your ticket, be sure to drop by the Break Point Games Lounge in the Monroe Park Campus' University Student Commons this evening at 6:00pm when they become available! VCU students are able to receive one ticket with a valid VCU student ID, and ONE additional ticket for another student, ONLY if you have their VCU ID as well.

The VCU Young Democrats are holding officer elections NEXT MONDAY 8pm, below Shafer @ Rodneys's. I urge everyone to review the list of officers below and to run for an office.

How do you run? Send me an email at

Include: your name, what office you are interested in running for and a short statement about why you are running and what you would like to do in office.

This will be sent out to our members via email before the election. Send the email to me by 7:30pm on Monday April 27th. If you have any questions about the offices or the elections process, please email them to me.

We will vote on our new officers on April 27th:

President
The President shall serve as a strong chief executive of the organization. He/She shall oversee the organization on a day-to-day basis and make interim organizational decisions. The president shall serve as the official representative of the organization to the Democratic Party and the Virginia Young Democrats. The president shall call events and meetings and ensure that the event is a success. The President or a designated individual shall lead events and meetings.

Vice President of Communication
The Vice-President of Communication shall be responsible for developing innovative communication strategies for the organization. He/She or a designated individual shall develop flyers/banners advertising our organization and its events. The Vice-President of Communication shall develop releases and with the cooperation of the president; serve as the spokesperson for the organization.

Vice President of Finance
The Vice-President of Finance or his or her designee shall present a report at each officers meeting. Such report shall include, but is not limited to, the balance of funds in the Club's financial accounts. The Club�s financial records shall be open to inspection by any member of the Club at any reasonable time. The Vice-President of Finance shall also be in charge of maintaining an account of all club owned materials and inventories.

Vice President of Volunteer Coordination
The Vice-President of Volunteer Coordination shall lead internal and external efforts requiring organized volunteers. Internally the volunteer coordinator shall lead efforts to put up event flyers and supporting our internal events. Externally, the volunteer coordinator shall work with campaigns so as to be a resource liaison by tapping volunteer resources and organizing the logistics of operations (transportation, communication, and refreshments). This officer will contact members via telephone and email to solicit their help with aforementioned activities.

Vice President of Membership Development
The Vice-President of Membership Development shall be responsible for increasing our membership on campus. The officer will also oversee the maintenance of organizations membership records.

Vice President of Hospitality
The Vice-President of Hospitality shall oversee the fun side of our events. This officer will oversee obtaining and setting up of refreshments. Also this officer shall, from time to time, organize off campus social events for the organization.

Photographer
The Photographer shall record a photographic history of our events. These photos shall be posted to our website.

Webmaster
The webmaster shall maintain and develop the VCU YD website and other IT applications.

YD Travel

This past weekend 12 YDs traveled to Charlottesville to partake in the Virginia Young Dem state convention. The three-day event was a blast. We had a very successful trip. Our chapter of YD has the second highest membership totals in the state, and we were able to exercise the third largest amount of votes at convention!

Jon Ward, chapter president. Was relected as President of Council of Presidents.
Tavarris Spinks, VP Finance, was elected state Executive Board secretary.
Katie Ford was elected state VP of Communication.
Danny Barefoot, Director of Fundraising, was elected Central region caucus chair.
Gonzalo Aida, VP of Membership Development, was elected Central region caucus vice-chair.

Congradulations VCU for immersing ourselves and taking over! Haha!

JJ TICKETS AVAILABLE

If you are interested in going to the JJ Dinner and do not have a dinner ticket here are a few ways you can get one.

Rich Savage

Mr. Savage has FIVE JJ tickets left for YD's. If you would like to attend the Dinner for free you can volunteer to collect gather petition signatures during the day leading up to JJ. So that means on Saturday morning from 9am to 3pm you will be collecting signatures.

we will need to hear from you by Tuesday if you are interested. Please note there are only 5 available form this campaign and that if you are truly interested you should reply immediately.

Help out the Dem. Party of VA

You can get into the JJ Dinner this way, but you will not be able to be seated at a table. This would be great if you were interested in volunteering to hear President Clinton speak.

You will be volunteering from 4pm till 9pm. you will be signing people in, allowing guests with proper credentials into certain receptions and various other tasks. You will NOT be serving dinner.

IMPORTANT VOTING INFORMATION

If you need to check on the status of your Virginia voter registration please go the State Board of Elections website here

If you don't find your registration where you think it should be you should call the count/city where you registered. Please email a link to this site to any of your friends who are not sure if or where they are registered to vote.

ABSENTEE VOTING

You can request an absentee ballot until Tuesday October 28. I recommend faxing the form to the county/city registrar where you vote. If you are going home by November 1st you can vote early in person by going to your county/city registrar. If you are not sure where you vote or how to contact your county/city registrar check the like above. You can find the absentee ballot request form here: VA Absentee Ballot.

MEETING

Our next Meeting will be this Thursday 10.23.08 in Virginia Room B at 8:30pm in the Student Commons. We will be talking about volunteer opportunities and giving away campaign stuff.

Campaign Invasion This Saturday

The Virginia Young Democrats Young Voter Revolution campaign will be working in VA Beach this Saturday to get out the youth vote for the Democratic ticket this Saturday. The Hampton Rhodes area is going to be crucial for a presidential victory in November. Join other Young Democrats from around the state to knock on doors for Dems. House Minority Whip at Richmond Obama Headquarters

Sen. Obama was in Richmond yesterday to remind us that the election is not over and we still need to work hard to make sure we win. This Friday House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn will be at Obama HQ at 1:15p to talk about the importance of volunteering. As if you already did not know, the Obama HQ is right behind the Segal Center. Yeah, it's the one with the big letters in the window that say OBAMA. We know you have probably getting a lot of requests for your time but we are in the last 2 weeks before the election; if you have already volunteered please do so again and if you have not now is the time to help out.

Obama Girls of Comedy

This group of four comedians will be performing on October 30 at the Canal Club. They will be raising awareness among female voters. Proceeds will be donated to the Obama Campaign. Tickets are $10 with student ID and $12 regular price. For more information check out their facebook group

Campus Campaign Challenge

Time: Anytime between 1:00pm and 6:00pm (both dates)

This weekend, all us Rams have to come together for Senator Obama. We each need to knock on just 30 doors. Just 30 doors, that takes an hour at the most; by doing so you can join this incredible movement. Everyone who brings at least one friend (don't stop there, bring five!), gets entered into a raffle to meet Senator Obama!!!

This weekend’s events serve as a competition between colleges and universities across the Commonwealth! Please come out and show your VCU pride by coming out this weekend!

Upcoming Events 9/13 - 9/20

VCU Young Dems will be participating in a bi-partisan voter-awareness rally on Thursday, September 18th as part of an effort to rally young voters here on campus. “VOTE HARD, w/ NAACP @ VCU” will also serve to educate students about their rights as voters and to inform them about major positions within both parties.

The event will be held in the Student Commons Plaza from 3pm – 5pm. If any VCU Young Dem would like to help station our information table during that time, please contact us.

Volunteer Opportunities

The coordinated campaign will also be canvassing every weekend until Nov. 4. This weekend’s canvassing locations are as follows:

TIMES: Saturday, September 13th at 10:00AM and Sunday, September 14th at 1:00PM.

Tuesday, we will be gathering to watch former Governor and U.S. Senate candidate Mark Warner deliver the keynote address to the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Also, our gathering will celebrate the 88th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment as we watch Senator Hillary Clinton commemorate her impressive campaign!

WHAT: Nomination Acceptance Speech

WHEN: August 2[8th; 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

WHERE: The Underground, University Student Commons

Barack Obama will be accepting his nomination as the Democratic Presidential Nominee at 10pm. Join us at 8pm in the VCU Student Commons as we celebrate this time-changing event.

The event starts at 8pm as we watch introductory speeches; the food will arrive at 9. The main program begins at 10, with Barack Obama's acceptance speech laying the groundwork for victory in November.

We hope you all come out, grab a bite to eat, and meet fellow supporters like yourself. This will also be the VCU Young Democrat's first general body meeting of the new semester: it will be brief and informal.

Also joining the event will be several state staffers from the campaign (i.e. a great opportunity for name dropping and networking).
